After four appalling years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take on a position as lighthouse keeper at Janus Rock, almost half a day off the coast. To this remote island, on which the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold and loving woman, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and a stillbirth, the mournful Isabel hears the cries of a baby in the wind. A boat has been washed ashore with a dead man and a live baby.
Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have resisted a terrible war, wants to report the man and the child immediately, nonetheless, Isabel insists that the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s verdict, they testify that she is her Property and notify Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel sweep back to the mainland and are reminded that there are extra people in the world. Your choice has destroyed one of them.
